Beyond grinding rollers and table segments, vertical roller mills contain several other wear-prone components that require periodic replacement. These auxiliary parts — louvre rings, separator vanes, dam rings, armour plates and mill housing wear plates — directly affect grinding efficiency, airflow distribution and product fineness control. Neglecting them during a roller or table change can leave the mill operating below its design capacity.

ATF manufactures VRM auxiliary parts in the same high-chromium white iron, Ni-Hard and heat-resistant alloy families used for rollers and table segments. All parts are manufactured to OEM dimensional tolerances from customer-supplied or OEM drawings. Louvre Ring / Nozzle Ring

The louvre ring encircles the grinding table and controls the velocity and distribution of hot drying gas entering the grinding chamber. Gas flows through the angled vanes of the louvre ring, carrying fine ground material upward toward the separator while coarse particles fall back onto the table. Wear occurs from material spillage over the table edge and from entrained particles in the gas stream. In high-temperature applications (coal mills, hot raw meal), the louvre ring also faces thermal stress that can cause warping or cracking if the alloy is not suited to the temperature range.

High-chrome white iron for standard temperature applications. Heat-resistant alloy steel (e.g., 25Cr12Ni type or similar austenitic heat-resistant grade) for mills operating above 300°C.

Separator Components — Guide Vanes and Rotor Blades

VRM separators classify the ground material by particle size. Static separators use fixed guide vanes to direct airflow. Dynamic (or high-efficiency) separators add a rotating cage or rotor that creates a centrifugal classification effect, enabling tighter control of product fineness. Both types experience wear from the abrasive fine particles in the airstream. Guide vanes and rotor blades can be replaced individually during shutdowns.

Dam Ring and Scraper Blades

The dam ring sits at the outer edge of the grinding table and controls the depth of the material bed. Proper bed depth is essential for stable grinding — too thin and the rollers contact the table directly (causing vibration and accelerated wear); too thick and grinding efficiency drops. Scraper blades remove ground material from the table surface and direct it toward the discharge. Both components are subject to abrasive wear and should be inspected at every shutdown.

Inspecting and replacing auxiliary parts during roller and table shutdowns is good practice. Louvre ring condition directly affects gas distribution and grinding efficiency. Dam ring height should be checked whenever table segments are replaced. Combining replacements reduces the total number of shutdowns and ensures all components are matched to the new roller and table profiles.
What information do you need to supply louvre ring components?
ATF needs the mill manufacturer and model, the louvre ring drawing number or OEM reference, the number of segments (louvre rings are usually segmented), and the operating temperature. For high-temperature applications, the gas temperature range helps determine the correct alloy.
Do you supply separator components for both static and dynamic separators?
Yes. ATF manufactures guide vanes for static separators and rotor blades for dynamic (high-efficiency) separators. Both are manufactured from wear-resistant alloy steel with optional hardfacing. Send the separator type, drawing references and current part condition.
Can scraper blades and dam rings be hardfaced for extended life?
Scraper blades can be hardfaced with chromium carbide overlay to extend wear life, particularly on the leading edge. Dam rings can also be hardfaced, though replacement is often more practical given their relatively simple geometry and lower cost compared to rollers or table segments.
